On January 2, 2025, NEHHDC inaugurated the largest Eri Silk Spinning Plant in Northeast India at the Integrated Textile Park in Mushalpur, Baksa district, Assam. The event was graced by Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), as the Chief Guest. The facility, developed at a cost of ₹14.92 crore, is a significant stride in promoting sustainable silk production, with a daily capacity to produce 450 kilograms of Eri silk yarn. It is expected to provide direct employment to a record number of individuals and benefit over 50,000 households, furthering the socio-economic development of the region.
The ceremony also saw the presence of other esteemed dignitaries, including Dhaananjoy Basumatary, Executive Member (Handloom & Textile, Food Processing); Daobaisa Boro, Executive Member (Sericulture); Rakesh Brahma, Local Executive Member (Fishery, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Diary); Bhupen Boro, MLA of the 62-Barama constituency; Ractim Boragohain, Secretary of Handlooms and Textile; Goutam Das, Deputy Commissioner of Baksa; and Dr. Anjan Chakrabarti, Director of Sericulture, BTC.
Brigadier R.K. Singh (Retd.), Managing Director of NEHHDC, who played a pivotal role in the setting up of the plant, emphasized the transformative potential of this plant for the Eri silk industry. He highlighted its role in empowering artisans and integrating local silk production into broader markets. With its eco-friendly and cruelty-free production process, the plant upholds the values of sustainability and ethical practices, aligning with the cultural and ecological ethos of the region. This initiative not only preserves Northeast India's rich heritage but also has the potential to propel its handloom sector onto the national and international framework.
